From the community: Wizard of Oz tests
Here’s a post that caught my eye this week:
Journey Further’s Jonny Longden posted:
“You might be familiar with the concept of a 'painted door' test (a fake feature designed to gauge interest), but have you ever heard of a Wizard of Oz test? Here's a real example I was responsible for in the past:
Suppose you look after an automotive website where people can book a test drive. The form they fill in is actually just a request for a callback from a dealership, rather than an actual appointment booking. You wonder whether allowing people to actually book a slot would increase the number of actual bookings (since many people don't answer the callback).
However, developing this is complex as it requires some connection into dealership diary systems and the management of those systems, amongst other operational issues. So instead, for the purpose of a test, the website has the appearance of an appointment booking system, and yet when each customer uses it, there is actually a human on the backend manually managing the slots; booking into the dealership calendar; and sending a confirmation email.
There are many uses for this, and it is not as difficult to manage as it might first seem. Have you ever run one? How did it work out?”
If you’d like to learn more about Painted Door tests, Jyoti Malik recently spoke about those at our last Conference:
