“There is a well-known concept in A/B testing called the Novelty Effect.
It's a situation where people use a new feature (or just some change) simply because it's new, rather than because it's useful for them. Over time, the initial impact we observe dissipates.
I know only one method to detect it: breaking down the data into old users and new users. If we observe a statistically significant uplift for old users but not for new users, it's a potent signal that the novelty effect may be at play.
We use the fact that for new users everything is new and they are not influenced by their past experiences.”
